Mr. Yates is President and Chief Executive Officer of BB&T Securities and Senior Executive Vice President and Manager of BB&T Capital Markets, with more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. The BB&T Capital Markets Group includes the Corporate Banking and Capital Markets Securities Divisions. The Corporate Banking Division covers large corporate relationships, multi-bank loan syndications, and interest rate derivatives. The Securities Division includes equity research, institutional equity sales and trading, fixed income research, fixed income sales and trading, and investment banking. In addition, as president and chief executive officer of BB&T Securities, Mr. Yates is responsible for the retail brokerage network, which conducts business under the name BB&T Scott & Stringfellow.
Mr. Yates joined BB&T's Executive Management Team in 2012 and serves as a board member of BB&T Securities. Mr. Yates actively represents BB&T and BB&T Securities with the ABA Securities Association, the Securities Industries and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) and the Center for Capital Markets Competitiveness with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Yates joined BB&T through the merger of equals between BB&T and Southern National Bank in 1989. Prior to this, he was the chief lending officer for American Bank, which he co-founded in 1986. American Bank was acquired by Southern National Bank in 1989. From 1979 to 1985, Mr. Yates worked for Wachovia Bank, managing large corporate relationships throughout the southeastern United States.
Mr. Yates earned his degree in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979 and holds Series 7, 24 and 66 securities licenses.
